Continuing on with my 8 Day 7 Night Series of blogs here with my What’s in my Carry-On entry. Truly, I do not take any less in my Carry-on bag on an 8 day cruise than I would on a longer cruise; but, I’m going ahead and writing this post so that folks don’t have to peruse through that massive-all encompassing-rather overwhelming other post of mine…haha. 😉
Let’s get started. This is one of my most important pieces of luggage and one that stays with me from the moment we leave the house until the moment we arrive at our destination and beyond because I will use this on Excursions and such as well. It is never out of my sight. Now for a little discussion about the type of bag I prefer to carry. On our last cruise to Hawaii, I took a Vera Bradley Campus Backpack <~~~That is a link to Amazon as it seems that the Vera Bradley website isn’t carrying this particular bag in the pattern that I have. Regardless, this bag worked out perfectly:
And yes, I have placed all of my Captain Circle Pin’s on my bag:
This is also the bag that I will be taking on our next cruise to Canada and New England–We will be driving to that port thank goodness–I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that we don’t have to fly–my long legs do not care for that attribute of traveling–flying that is. You know when we were kids and it was an exciting adventure to get on a plane and jet off to wonderfully fun places. Yeah, well, I still love to go to the wonderfully fun places, I just wish I could do it without being made to feel like a sardine smashed in a can…lol. 😉 (I will admit that the last couple of times we’ve flown, Chris, bless his sweet heart, has upgraded us to 1st class for a nominal fee (he watched the price of the seats each day and when he saw them drop, he jumped on them and moved us—I was SO grateful!!)
ANYway, I digress, I loved that ^^^ bag when I carried it to Hawaii, but, I do want to show you one other type of bag that I will utilize as a Carry-On every now and again. This bag is a Trimmed Vera Tote <~~ Again an Amazon link to a different pattern than I have. Here is a picture of my bag in Parisian Paisley–IF you go to order this bag, please, please, please be careful and be sure to get the Vera Tote that measures: 18″ Wide, 15″ High, & has a 12″ Strap drop (Vera has many totes, most of which are smaller than this one). Here is mine:
As you can see, it has tons of pockets inside to hold all of your goodies and beyond. 🙂
This bag also holds my 13″ MacBook Pro very easily and that is always my consideration when choosing a Carry-On bag. Don’t judge please…:)
Here are the other things that I routinely take in my Carry-On, I’m sure your list will vary slightly to meet your needs. 🙂
When flying we all have to adhere to the TSA’s liquids rules, so I always take a quart-size ziplock bag to utilize for our liquids:
Of course I take a wallet with cash, credit cards, ID, and Passport…This is a Vera Bradley Kisslock Wallet:
My Kindle Paperwhite:
Earphones:
A crossword puzzle book—I’m always trying to do something to stimulate my brain, I really love doing crosswords and I even play a game on my iPhone called Words With Friends…I’m constantly working on expanding my vocabulary and challenging myself–a girl is never too old to do that right? 😉 🙂
I take one of these Pocket Folders with me to carry all of our travel documents, i.e. travel insurance papers, boarding passes, and the like. I do carry the other couple of folders in my checked baggage and I use them to save our daily cruise paperwork like the Princess Patter, port informational sheets, etc…
Let’s face it, we all could use a little something to freshen our breath and clean our teeth when traveling…I try to take something like this along:
And that about does it…Other than I will throw in a small packing cube with some unmentionables—*just* in case we have any flight delays and such. I don’t usually take an entire outfit though–unless we’re heading somewhere where I couldn’t go and buy a quick outfit if absolutely necessary.
I hope that this little post will help those of you who are getting ready to head out on a trip. Whether it be by plane, train, or automobile, these little items should suffice nicely to help get you to your destination.
Before I even get started here, I must say one more time that I’m no fashionista, but, I do like to try to look put together which helps me, a plus-sized girl, feel pretty–I think a nicely put together outfit can help those of us who might struggle a bit with our weight to feel a bit better. 🙂 So soldier on girls…of ALL shapes, sizes, and loveliness!! ❤
So let’s get started, our next cruise is fast approaching, we will be heading to New York–actually driving to the port this time– and will be climbing aboard the Regal (what?!!!) Princess that will then carry us to Canada & New England for our 7 night cruise.
Here is what our Itinerary will include:
I’ve been keeping an eye on our countdown and it is clicking along nicely. My Mama always told me to never wish my life away, and I try really hard not to do that, but, I will admit that when I’m looking forward to a cruise, I might do a little wishing that the time would move just a wee bit quicker. 😉 I’ve been trying to gather some clothes together for this trip and of course the challenge of not over-packing looms ahead of me…I will admit fully that I’ve overpacked greatly in the past. But, on our last cruise to Hawaii which was 15 days through all sorts of different weather, I managed to not over-pack too, too much. SO, I can certainly manage to pack for a 7 night cruise without overpacking…right? Fingers crossed folks, fingers crossed!! 😉 I’m approaching this packing challenge much like I do my Alaska Cruise wardrobe challenges only I’m going to try to go with more Fall-like colors. Also, as I mentioned above, we are driving to the Port, and we will need to get our luggage to the ship by ourselves and then we will be self-disembarking so I really need to try to fit everything clothes/must haves/shoes/everything in one large spinner suitcase — and if I need a bit more space, I’m planning on taking a “Weekender” bag to fit the little bit of overflow going if necessary and also provide a little extra room to add some souvenirs into on the way back. One great thing about the Weekender bag is that it has a sheath on the back of it that will allow me to slide it down over the handle of my suitcase which will consolidate both pieces and allow me to pull both with ease.
Here are the bags I’m planning to take:
The suitcase is a 29″ spinner from Samsonite. And the floral bag is from Vera Bradley and is called a Weekender…Here is a link . <~~ That link will take you to a Weekender bag, but not to the one I have pictured, as I couldn’t find one like it on the Vera site…what? (I bet you could find it on Ebay though–the pattern is called “Parisian Paisley”). As I mentioned above the Weekender has a sheath on the back that will allow me to place it onto the handle of the suitcase.
I will also be taking a “Campus Backpack” from Vera (again, that link that I provided there is not the pattern I have, but Ebay is my friend when I can’t find what I’m looking for on the Vera website–This black and white pattern is called “Midnight Paisley”). I will use this to pack up my laptop, travel papers, wallet, a little bag of necessities, crossword puzzle book, my kindle, etc…
Of course, being the geek that I am, I have placed all of my Princess Captain’s Circle pins on the front of the bag:
Now, let me show you some of the clothes that I’ve chosen and put together as possible outfits for this cruise. I figure, since it is going to be Fall on the East Coast, it is likely going to be somewhat chilly especially the further North we travel. So let’s start with the jacket that I will be taking for this trip, it is a Columbia Arcadia Casual Jacket. I purchased it in a 2x which fits me fine (it is a little large on me–I usually wear a 2x/18w/tall–But, I like it that way, I can layer much more easily if I have a little wiggle room. 😉 🙂
Okie dokie–Here are some of the outfits that I’ve put together, these may be subject to change and if I do change anything out, I’ll update this blog accordingly. 🙂
Let me preface this by saying that I’m only going to be taking black slacks–no jeans, no skirts, no other colored ‘bottoms’, and no dresses. <~~~ My attempt at keeping my packing to a minimum. 🙂 Here are a couple of links to the black stretchy slacks that I wear all of the time and that pack up beautifully. They never wrinkle and they wash up perfectly every time.
As you can see, one of my very favorite accents is a pretty scarf–Adding one really brightens up an outfit and they pack so easily and take up practically no room.
I thought I might like to take a pair of boots to wear with a couple of pairs of leggings that I have…Here are a two more outfits that I’m considering.
Of course, I need a nighttime knock-around outfit (I’ve been known to skip on off to the laundry room in such an outfit… 😉
A friend of mine (thanks Pat!!) has introduced me to “Compression Socks”, but, these are not the “ugly-white-hard-to-put-on” compression socks of old. These socks are so pretty and will really help to prevent my feet from swelling (I never, ever have swollen feet when off of a cruise ship, but, on our Hawaiian cruise, my feet got terribly swollen for a time–They did go back to normal but, for awhile there they were not lovely and they were hard to fit into some shoes..haha). Here is a link to “Plus Sized Support Like Crazy Compression Knee-Highs“. They do come in regular sizes as well. Here is a picture of the ones that I purchased and that I will be taking along with me on all of our cruises moving forward:
Shoe wise, I will be taking my dress-type boots as I know I’ll have room for them:
And also, I’ll take these two pairs of shoes–I’ll wear the Skechers Performance Womens Go Walk 3 Unfold Walking Shoe on our Excursions off of the ship. And I’ll be wearing the Sam & Libby shoes while on the ship to dress up the outfits a bit. And that’s it for shoes…Honestly! 🙂
***UPDATE: I am writing this on the day that I’m fixin’ to pack everything up for our cruise, and I have to tell y’all about a pair of shoes that I found. I had worn these shoes years and years ago and for a time there, I couldn’t find a replacement pair as I wore them till they had holes in them. Imagine my delight, when I finally came across them here. These are the *most* comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn, and they will replace the Sam & Libby shoes that I have pictured above. They run true to size and literally mold to your feet when you put them on…I love them!
Jewelry wise–I’m not going to take a ton, I’ve picked out these pieces so far–I love Brighton jewelry and my daughter Christin usually gets me a set for Christmas; I pictured 2 of the sets she has gotten me first.
***UPDATE: Day of packing post here again..haha….I’ve added a couple of things to my jewelry choices. Christin (my oldest) had gotten me this Brighton necklace for Christmas last year, I’m definitely adding it to my choices:
***UPDATE: And then, how could I forget my old standby—I love this little choker necklace and earring set from 1928 jewelry, I’ve had this set for over a decade and they are one of my major goto pieces…classic and simple:
***UPDATE: And my bracelets–The large bangle is actually from Vera, the two Alex & Ani bracelets are from my daughter and my cousin Stacey, the Brighton (hearts) goes with the heart set above, and the twisted bracelet is one that Chris got me literally 20 years ago and I’ve worn it every day since:
Wow, I can’t believe that that is *all* I’m going to take, but, truly, that is it! I do want to add a couple of packing tips and tricks of mine here though in case some of you are new readers and haven’t heard me lament about how much I LOVE this Eagle Creek Pack-It Folder
Here is my Medium sized folder stuffed full with over 20+ tops (this is what I took for our Hawaii cruise):
And my Shacke Pak packing cubes–I cannot stress enough how much I was able to fit into these cubes. I highly recommend them!
So, there we go, I’ll continue to tweak my wardrobe, probably until the moment it is all packed up in that folder and those cubes, and, admittedly, I might change out an outfit or two, but, this is the ‘look’ I’m going for–Outfits that are casual but, ones that I can dress up with a change in jewelry/shoes/scarves/etc…
I *think* I’m getting closer to being ready to pack my suitcase…OH, but, wait…I still have to work on my “don’t wish your life away” skills for a little while longer until it is truly time to go! 😉 I will be blogging that entire cruise, so stay tuned for my “Canada and New England Blog Series”.
Until next time, y’all take good care! ❤
~Arlynn ❤
***Final Update: Two other things that I did to prepare for this trip this week were, one, I got my hair colored as my grays were waving back at me when I looked in the mirror…and two, I got my nails done—I have “Pink & White” acrylic nails and my little technician did a lovely little design on my ring finger nails for me…:) I am ready to pack the rest of my stuff now!!
*****And we’ve sailed! Here are links all of my Blogs in this Series:
My goodness gracious, I am finding that I am quite sad and melancholy as I begin to write this my last Blog post in my Hawaiian Cruise Series. I was pretty sad while I was packing up to leave the Star Princess as well. It is always harder for me to pack at the end of a vacation than it is to plan the trip, organize the particulars, and pack the suitcases at the beginning of a journey. <Sigh> Regardless of whether or not I was ready to disembark, it was almost time to do so. The hubby and I spent the last afternoon on our last sea day packing our bags, we were ready to go…We went ahead and placed our suitcases outside of our stateroom door right after dinner that evening.
We found our ‘End of the cruise paperwork’ in our little mailbox along with our “Red 4” luggage tags that we were to put on our luggage that Princess would be transferring for us. We had pre-arranged for Princess to transfer us from Canada Place to the Vancouver Airport, and it showed us where and what time we were to report (the Vista Lounge)…
While packing, I made sure to put some shampoo, and my hair gel, and other necessities in smaller disposable bottles so that I could pack up my full-size bottles. Our daughter Christin had given both my hubby and I disposable (carry-on compliant) bottles; Christin is an organized person like her Mama and she fixed us right on up with all of these sweet little extras this past Christmas. 😉 🙂
Here is a picture of that extra bag that I had packed in my big suitcase all those many days ago, I knew I would need it for this last night; we’d carry it onto the airplane with us. We put our dirty clothes (packed up in a medium packing cube), my makeup & toiletries, the hubby’s morning toiletries, my curling iron (I used the ‘lovely’ stateroom’s hairdryer that morning throwing in a expletive here and there while drying my hair because it took me forever), and anything else that we saw that we needed to take with us.
SO, I was as packed as I could be…We had eaten our last dinner in the Horizon, walked around the ship taking pictures, and did some last minute shopping. OH and I went to the Captain’s Circle desk and picked up a couple of “Ruby” Pins…I had lost mine along the way somewhere, they were happy to give me two more. I had received our two Platinum pins earlier in the day accompanied by a letter welcoming us to our Platinum status…woohoo. Here is where I put all of my pins along with a pin of the Star Princess (that’s my carry on backpack):
We came back to our Stateroom and headed out onto the balcony because we could once again see land…
And we also got a little treat! We *finally* saw a wee bit of wildlife…These cute little (relatively speaking) Dall’s Porpoises showed up and were playing right around the ship. 🙂
They were so much fun to watch, I was like a little kid in a candy store…I was jumping up and down and clapping and squealing. I’m sure the other passengers thought I was a loon, I didn’t care much what they thought honestly, I was just happy to see these cutie pies. 🙂 ANYway, we sat out there until dark taking in the sights and sounds of our last evening on our cruise; bittersweet thoughts along with mixed emotions were flying around in my head. On one hand, I was ready to go home because I missed my family and my pups, but, I sure wasn’t ready for our much anticipated trip to come to a close. OH well, all good things must come to an end huh?
The next morning, we woke up and our “Log of the Cruise” was in our little mailbox, check out the distance traveled!! Wow Whee!!
And here is my last outfit of the day, comfy and cozy to travel home in:
We stood out on our balcony and watched while we traveled under the Lion’s Gate Bridge one last time:
And onward to Canada Place we sailed:
That is a fake smile on my face, I really wasn’t too, too thrilled in that picture…my hair was sure BIG through…LOL…Again, if a girl can’t laugh at herself, then there is something wrong…;)
We had to be out of the room by 8am, so we complied and headed to the Vista Lounge to wait to be called to disembark. This is about how I felt about getting off of the ship…I look hateful mean…I’m really just sad…:(
ANYway, we waited for about 45 minutes, and then our number was called and off of the ship we walked, straight into Canada Place, and onto our awaiting motor coach.
<I took no pictures of this process–just wasn’t in the mood I guess>
We had an uneventful trip to the airport, we were familiar with this ride because we’ve always disembarked from Canada Place (we’ve done 4 Alaska: Voyage of the Glaciers Southbound cruises that all ended in Vancouver). When we got to the airport, we went through US customs there…pretty painless process and then we headed to our terminal and awaited our flight to leave.
There was our first plane…
And we were headed home…Which at this point, I was pretty content to be doing, this is what I saw out of the jet’s window…apparently this is Wenatchee National Forest, Stehekin, United States (according to the time and location stamp in my Photos on my Mac)…
We had uneventful flights home and we landed safely and got back to our house at around 2am the next morning…yes, to say we were tired is an understatement…but, it was good to be home. Here is what greeted us as we drove up our driveway and made our way into the house. 🙂 🙂 ❤
It was so good to be home!!
And it was SO good to see our pups…
Now for some final thoughts about this cruise. As I have written these posts one after the next, I have found that I really didn’t have a lot of negative things to say and that’s because this was a wonderful trip that provided my hubby and I with many memories to tuck away and cherish for the rest of our lives.
A note all of you out there who have been so kind with your comments, thank you so very, very, VERY much, every comment has been taken straight to my heart and I am humbly grateful for the responses that I’ve received. ❤
So, sadly, it is time for me to close this Series out now, I have greatly enjoyed sharing our adventure with you. For now, I will go back to my crafting, decorating, and DIY projects (why I originally started this blog site…haha). More travel blogs will appears when we debark on our next journey…most likely with Princess, hopefully, sooner than later.
So for now, I will bid you all adieu and send you my love and say once last time…
As I was perusing through my literally thousands of pictures that we took while on our wonderful cruise, and when I started to pull pictures out to be used in this blog post, I realized that I had way too many pictures and that this would end up to be a very confused and discombobulated post. So “Ms Anal Retentive” herself < ~~~~ me, decided to make collages out of ‘like’ pictures via a spiffy little app that I have on my iPhone. I have literally spent this entire day making these collages, but, I’m thinking that y’all will appreciate my efforts once you start scrolling through this post. 🙂
First, I will show you this gorgeous ship, the Star Princess from a bit of a distance:
She is a big, gorgeous girl to look at isn’t she? I love the way that Skywalkers is situated on the back, I think that it really gives this ship a ton of character.
Now, let’s climb on this beauty and work our way from the bottom to the top. Here is a little map that will help us navigate (of course there are a few decks even higher than this sign depicts…I didn’t get a picture of that sign…lol). 🙂 Please know that as hard as I tried, I did not get pictures of every single venue, but, the hubby and I worked as a team and traversed around the ship a lot taking random pictures and did the best that we could.
Deck 4: Gala Deck–This is where we caught our Tender Boat:
Deck 5: Plaza Deck:
I’ll go ahead and insert the collage of the Piazza here–It was breathtakingly gorgeous!
The International Cafe…Yum, Yum!!
Vines Shop: The hubby got us a really good candy bar from here one day:
The Internet Cafe:
The Capri Dining Room:
The only time we went in here was to attend one of their spiffy little sales that they often have going on on sea days:
Deck 6: Fiesta Deck:
Grand Casino:
Passenger Service Desk:
Calypso Cove:
And at the far end of Calypso Cove, you will find the Sundries shop:
Essence:
This is also the deck where they would set up tables for different special sales…
Promenade Deck:
Princess Theater:
Shore Excursions (the Princess Captain’s Circle & the Future Cruise offices were down this same hallway:
Crown Grill (This was by far our favorite place to eat):
Meridian Bay:
Photo Gallery:
Vista Lounge:
Dolphin Deck:
Our Mini-Suite was on this deck, D620, if you would like to see a very detailed video tour, I created one on my YouTube channel, you can find it here.
The walls in the Staterooms are metal, so it is always fun to bring some magnets with which to hang things:
We used the Laundromat on this floor a couple of times while on board, you use your cruise card to purchase tokens ($3 a piece) which then can be used in the washers and dryers and also to purchase laundry soap and dryer sheets (I recommend you take your own laundry supplies though, much cheaper and they don’t take up too much room in your luggage) It is free to use of the iron and ironing boards :
Deck 14-The Lido Deck:
Prego Pizza:
Trident Grill:
Neptune’s Reef & Pool and Movies Under the Stars:
Sundaes:
Calypso’s Reef & Pool:
As you can see in the pictures ^^^above^^^ there is a terrace type thing that wraps around the indoor pool (one deck up). They have chairs up there along with some ping-pong tables…very relaxing little place.
Horizon Court Buffet:
The Self-Serve Coffee/Tea Station, there is one on each side of the Horizon Buffet:
The Crab Shack is also held on this floor, they close down one side of the Horizon Buffet in order to accommodate the Shack…SO, SO good, highly recommend!!
Horizon Terrace and Pool
And then a couple more Decks higher is Skywalkers Nightclub:
Unfortunately, we did not get any pictures of the Sanctuary, the Fitness Center, the Wedding Chapel, the Youth/Teen Center, or a couple of the Main Dining Rooms along with other places that I probably don’t even realize exist..haha. 🙂 BUT, again, we did our best. 🙂 It truly is a lovely ship, (a bit of maintenance is needed in places, but, that is to be expected on a ship this size and one that is ‘at sea’ as much as this one is–I’m not complaining, just stating a fact); the crew works extremely hard each and every day to keep it sparkling clean and in great shape! 🙂 Speaking of the crew…they were absolutely wonderful, everyone ALWAYS had a smile on their face, everyone ALWAYS had a nice greeting or a put forth a sweet “Have a nice morning/day/evening”, I never saw one of them in a bad mood or being grumpy…ever!
I have one more Blog entry that will end this Series and in that I will talk about Disembarkation, possibly some final thoughts, although, I’ve pretty much said all I need to say, and our trip home (including a video of our pups when we walked back into the house). For those of you who don’t know, we have a Golden Retriever named Gracie, and two Newfoundland dogs names Sophie and Samson (brown). Here is a picture that I took of them yesterday…
And…Here is a link to my final post in this Hawaiian Cruise Series:
OH one more thing…Here is a link to my very first post in this Hawaiian Cruise Series — And as in this one, there is a link at the end of each post that will take you to the next one in line–in chronological order. 🙂
And ***one*** more thing…haha…I promise just one more. 😉 Here is a video that I created for my YouTube Travel Channel (Arlynn’s Travels) of the Star Princess picture tour:
I was awakened on the morning that we arrived in Maui with the oh so soothing (not) sound of the little “Tender” boats being lowered down into the water. As y’all know, our room was situated toward the aft of the ship, port side, and they chose to lower the Tenders right under our room down to be utilized to transport folks to shore. Of course, I didn’t mind being woken up, after all, we were in Maui! I will admit though, a wave of sadness came over me for a few minutes when I remembered that we were at our last port of call. I wasn’t going to think about that right then though, I’d think about that tomorrow when we were bob-bob-bobbing along heading back to Vancouver. That morning, I needed to get up and get ready for our day. 🙂
The stupid saga of my feet continues, grrrrr, we again had to cancel a day long excursion that we had had planned because my feet just weren’t recovering very well, stupid feet!
Honestly, we didn’t mind too, too much. Taking a little ride on a Tender boat, walking around town, shopping a bit, and having a nice lunch by the sea sounded really pretty perfect to us–we had been go-go-going for the last 3 days. We were content to have a bit of a more relaxing day planned. 🙂
***(BTW–My feet recovered completely after this day because the hubby pretty much wouldn’t let me stand, propped my feet up on a chair, and made me drink a copious amount of water for our 1st day back ‘at sea’..AND that did the trick, I haven’t had a problem since…thank goodness)***
Okay, so my outfit for the day…
Yes, I did wear those flip-flops, the next best thing to those pretty pink shoes. 🙂
And here is the Princess Patter for that day:
In the Patter there were instructions as to how one was to go about disembarking, we simply needed to head down to the Capri Dining room when we were ready to leave the ship, they’d give us a “Tender Ticket”, and we’d wait for our number to be called. All in all, it was a very smooth operation–not surprising because Princess has this stuff down pat. So off to the Capri Dining room we trekked…
And we were handed our Tender Ticket:
And then we sat down to wait:
It wasn’t long before our number was called (about 30 minutes), we were directed to go down a couple of decks (via stairs of course) to where we’d be loaded onto our sweet little **rocking** Tender boat…We saw this on our way:
Here the pictures will stop for a few minutes…That little Tender was rocking and rolling let me tell you…LOL…I took a look at it and then I looked at my hubby and grabbed onto him for dear life. It was going to be interesting getting ole “not so steady on her swollen, fat feet, bad knees, Arlynn” onto that ever moving Tender boat…
But, by the grace of all that is holy and with the help of the hubby and every Princess person’s hand that I could grab, I managed to step right onto that Tender. It was then that I saw the hubby climbing the LADDER to go up onto the top deck…OH JOY JOY…Okay, I was determined and I managed to climb right up (slowly) and pretty much fell right onto the little bench seat and proceeded to slide my rear to where it needed to sit. Whew, that was a little harrowing, but, dag nab it, I did IT!! Woohoo!!!
It was a lovely little ride to shore, and because I had managed to haul my ever so cumbersome self up that ladder, my vantage point was awesome. My favorite part was being able to see the Star Princess from the outside up close!
The view heading to shore was nothing to sneeze at either….
It was much less wavy when we pulled into the dock and I was able to climb right on off of that Tender with ease…The first thing that happened was that my hubby bought me a beautiful Lei…OMGosh, it smelled delightful!! AND the lady who made the Lei sweetly gave me a flower for my hair…BUT, it blew away within about 10 seconds of it being seeded not so securely into my hair (she had secured the flower onto a toothpick…now how in the world was I supposed to stick that in my hair and have it stay put with the gale force winds that were warmly blowing)? **Just asking…Silly of me I know…*** 😉 ANYway, here is that pretty Lei:
Windy? Yeppers, VERY windy! lol…
The hubby and I set off to do a bit of exploring and shopping, really nothing too astronomically interesting to tell you about that. We did see this school sign, it made me think of our daughter the teacher whose attitude is this almost every day of her life. 🙂
We were successful at buying some gifts for our girls on this day, we found some Vans shoes for a pretty decent price and they were really cute! We got the cupcake ones for one of our daughters…
And these spiffy tropical ones for the other daughter:
We also got each girl some pretty jewelry a necklace for one and earrings and a bracelet for the other. 🙂 My hubby treated me to some pretty jewelry too, he got me this pretty Plumeria flower necklace:
And then this necklace, earrings, and bracelet; a white plumeria flower just like the pink one up there…
After we had shopped for a little while, we stopped into a lovely, open and airy restaurant named Koa’s. It sat right on the ocean and upon entering, we, of course, climbed the ***stairs*** to the top outdoor deck. By this point, ***stairs*** and I were ‘one’. 😉
Here is the Menu for Koa’s:
And this was my lunch…OH goodness was it good, fattening yes, but delicious! That pasta salad was to die for!
This was our view in one direction…
And check out what was over my head in the background …I actually moved to the other side of the table after I took this silly selfie so that I could look out over the water…
After lunch, we started to head back toward where we would catch the Tender boat that would take us back to the Star…I clicked off a few pictures along the way…
Check out these two ladies…I would have LOVED to do that, but there was a line…Next time!
AND the gorgeous palm trees, blue sky, and puffy white clouds…Exactly how I’ve always pictured Hawaii…
Getting a Tender ride back to the ship was as easy as could be, we just walked right up and climbed on (literally, because we climbed to the upper deck again…haha…BUT, I was able to take this little video—Well part of the video is of them lowering the Tender down in the morning, but then the rest of it is of our little ride back…
I’m such a goober, I was taking selfies right and left, but, how many times are you sitting on a Tender boat with a HUGE cruise ship in the background?
We were back to the ship…AND maneuvering OFF of that Tender was NO easier than the harrowing trip was ONTO the Tender…LOL…I’m lucky I’m alive to tell the tale…<~~~ Just kidding of course, but, it was really rocky and I again grabbed onto my hubby, any available Princess person, strangers, poles, the roof of the Tender… once I got DOWN the devil ladder, and well, I’m betting y’all can picture it. 😉 I was happy to have my feet back on that solid ship <~~~ Uh huh, that made good sense…LOL…Relative to the Tender, that big ship was like the Rock of Gibraltar! 😉
The rest of the day/evening was spent r-e-l-a-x-i-n-g and hanging out on our balcony watching the Tenders come and go—Scintillating entertainment huh? Well, maybe not, but, we were happy to just sit and bask in the sunlight that Maui was providing on this gorgeous day in April 2016.
Here is the last Tender returning to the ship:
The sun went down over the western sky and our Hawaiian Islands experience had come to a conclusion. The cruise was far from over, but, we had seen all we were going to see of the Islands…Kinda sad really, but, I do feel as if we will return again…Lord willing anyway. 🙂 Many thanks to the gorgeous Hilo and her waterfalls, to Honolulu for allowing us to pay our respects to all of our brave, fallen soldiers, to Kauai for her beautiful crater and gorgeous views, and to Maui for finishing off our experience with a calm, very sweet, warm, sunny day. Hawaii will never be forgotten and we will hold all of the memories that we made while visiting her close to our hearts and ever in our minds. ❤
I’m not quite done with this blog series yet…Next up, I’ll take you on a tour of the Star Princess–Via pictures of course. I’ll show you how we enjoyed “The Crab Shack” & “The Crown Grill”, and..wait for it…THE LAUNDRY ROOM <~~~ exciting stuff! 😉 I’ll also share with you some of the gifts that I brought home for my family, among other things I’m sure. 🙂 Then in my last entry in this series, I will give you a short synopsis of my all-over thoughts about this cruise.
***One more thing. 🙂 Here is a video that I created of our day in Maui after I had finished writing my Hawaii Blog—I also have a YouTube Travel Channel (Arlynn’s Travels):
Our 3rd port of call was Kauai, I was really looking forward to this day as I had the 2 previous days because each day of this cruise had been an adventure and I was looking forward to whatever might come our way on this day. The hubby was out doing his morning walk and taking pictures of the sunrise while I pulled myself together for the day’s activities (“pulling myself together” takes a little longer these days, so the hubby busied himself each morning as I primped…haha…;) ). Anyway, this is what I saw when I opened the drapes of our mini-suite that morning:
And here is the outfit that I chose to wear on this day. Now, remember, I had purchased those fancy pink shoes…
And I wanted to wear them on this day because I knew that we had a good bit of walking ahead of us, so this is the outfit I chose. I’ll lament further on those orange pants a little later. :
The very first thing that I noticed about Kauai was that it was windy as all get out when I went out on the balcony to try to take a selfie…Note those orange pants don’t look too bad…Y-E-T…;) The hubby ended up taking this picture…or tried to take this picture…I gave up after a while…lol…
ANYways, enough about those silly pants for the moment…
Little did I know that while I was pulling myself together, my hubby had caught some gorgeous pictures of us coming into port and of a lovely rainbow!
There’s the rainbow!! 🙂
And check out this gorgeous sunrise, the prettiest one we’d seen up to this point:
Here is the Princess Patter for that day (Nawiliwili is the name of the Port *in* Kauai*…
Here is a description of the excursion that we had planned:
We disembarked the Star Princess and met our mode of transportation for the day, this motor coach:
Our bus driver was the nicest fella, quite full of information (and of himself…he was a hoot). We started our 2 hour drive to Waimea Canyon with him narrating the entire way–He was full of stories and jokes. Kauai was a gorgeous island and I was thrilled to be hearing about all of the old stories about its beginnings and its people as we meandered around and through lovely little towns. Again, Princess does a phenomenal job when choosing these excursion guides/bus drivers/narrators…They are all excellent. I know some people feel that they can save a plethora of money by NOT using Princess to book their excursions, but, honestly, it is worth it to us to go ahead and use them, especially on this trip, this was our first time doing this particular cruise and we truly would have had no earthly idea of where to begin to choose off the ship excursions if it weren’t for Princess’ guidance. Shoot, even when we’re in Alaska (we’ve cruised there 4 times) we still use Princess…most of the time.
So, our first stop on the way to Waimea Canyon was here at Spouting Horn (and for a potty break if needed). What was the first sign I saw when I got off of the bus? This…LOL:
Really? Feral cats and chickens? Well I didn’t see any cats, but there were a couple of roosters strutting around…haha.
This was a lovely little lookout type place, the water was so blue and just gorgeous, the grass was green and lush, we definitely felt like we were in the tropics:
And here is Spouting Horn:
Wow, that was pretty neat, I really enjoyed our little stop there. It was time to climb back on the bus and head on up (literally…WAY up) to Waimea Canyon…
There were two ways that could be utilized to get up the the Canyon’s lookout, one was a set of stairs that yes, I traversed, and also there was a large winding pathway/ramp type thing that those with physical problems could use…Here is a picture of that pathway, as you can kind of see, it winds its way back and forth so as to reduce the pitch of the climb.
As you probably read in the description of this excursion ^^^up there^^^, we were getting ready to gaze upon what Mark Twain had dubbed “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”. It was an amazingly gorgeously, ridiculously stupendous place. I think the pictures will speak for themselves, so I’ll hush now and just show you the beauty that *is* Waimea Canyon:
To give you a sense of the sheer size of this canyon, the white blip in the picture below is a helicopter! 🙂 Goodness gracious!
Another couple was nice enough to take this picture of the hubby and I:
YES, it was e-x-t-r-e-m-i-l-y windy! lol
AND those stupid orange pants that I had on had now expanded to a VERY large size…What in the world?! They stretched out SO much…I needed SUSPENDERS…NO kidding, I really needed suspenders!!! Sheesh…I was a mess for myself! I know I’m a big girl, but, I do NOT fill up those pants in this picture!! I’m lucky I didn’t get picked up by that wind and whisked away down into that canyon…Well, if that had happened, those pants would have served as a parachute and I would have landed safe and sound on the bottom. 😉 (A girl has to laugh at herself once in a while…lol):
Okay, enough of my ranting and raving about those stupid pants…LOL…We headed back down to our motor coach. They had a fruit stand set up beside the parking lot with fresh pineapple and candies and all sorts of yummy snacks and more of that fruity canned juice that we had had in Hilo:
And there was another rooster here and he was strutting himself around all over the place…;)
Here is our motor coach driver blowing into his conch shell giving us our 5 minute warning–it was time to get ourselves back to the bus…I’ll tell you, he really was a funny fellow.
And back to the ship we traveled being entertained the entire way (2 hours).
Check out what was waiting for us right before we climbed back onto the ship–The Princess folks did this every single day…Those cloths were damp and scented…ahhhhh, did they ever feel good!!
The hubby and I were very hungry and we headed to the Buffet for something to eat…I changed my outfit though, I’d had enough of those stupid parachute pants!! Here was my outfit for the evening hours…Notice my feet were getting better though because I’d worn those spiffy pink shoes. 🙂
After we got back to our room, we kind of hung out in there for the rest of the evening…Well, we really hung out out on our balcony because sail-away was kinda fun to watch. The dock workers unhitched us…And the side thrusters started to do their job…
As I’ve mentioned ohhhh once or twice in this entry, it was really windy on this day and I guess it was so windy that we needed a little assistance from a tug boat to get us out of the harbor. I had such a good time watching this little (relatively speaking) tug boat protect us from hitting the dock–as far as I know though, it never had to touch us, it was just there as a back-up if needed.
Our room must have been right at the pivot point because the tug boat stayed right below our room for quite some time as we made our way out of the harbor…
Once we got out far enough, the tug boat left us and we fended for ourselves to maneuver around and through those buoys…
We skirted the shoreline for a while on our way out of this cove and we came to this point. I saw this golf green right on the edge of a cliff…Haha…My 80 year old Dad is an avid golfer and has had 8 holes in one in his lifetime–he is a “scratch” golfer (doesn’t carry a handicap for you non-golfers out there). I know he would have loved to play *this* golf course…and particularly this hole…he loves a challenge. 🙂
Check out where the Pin is…Goodness!
Our day in Kauai had come to an end and as the hubby and I sat out on our balcony and enjoyed the warm tropical breezes while watching the sun set, we lamented once again at how lucky and blessed we felt to be able to do this awesomely beautiful cruise. We felt so relaxed and were just loving being right there at that moment in time….Memories were being made that we’d hold in our minds and hearts forever. ❤
We were steaming toward Maui, and of course, that is what I’ll be writing about next. Here is a sneak peek and link:
OH one more thing…I am going to insert some links in here just in case anyone might want to look back on my earlier posts that I’ve written about this cruise. I’ll also include a link to my video (very detailed) that I took and narrated of our Mini-Suite (D620 on the Star Princess).
***One more thing. Here is a video that I created of our day in Kauai after I had finished writing my Hawaii Blog—I also have a YouTube Travel Channel (Arlynn’s Travels):
The feeling I have right at this moment as I start to write this post is one of quiet respect, mournful solitude, prayerful sorrow, and complete and utter sadness for those brave men and women we lost on December 7, 1941 in the attack on Pearl Harbor. This will not be an easy post to write, but, I will try my best to give you the overall feeling of how touring the World War II Valor in the Pacific site affected me.
When I awoke and we were docked alongside Honolulu, my mind started to go to that fateful day and to all of the details that I’ve read in all of the history books; I knew that I was going to experience, in the only way we who were not alive on that fateful day can experience, the horror of the deadly attack on Pearl Harbor that the United States endured. One of the main reasons that I wanted to go to Hawaii was so that I could pay my own respects to all that perished that day and to somehow, even if it was only by my quiet, respectful attitude while on that hallowed ground, convey my thoughts and prayers and most humbled reflection. It was not going to be an easy day for me, but, it was one that I had looked forward to for some time.
All that said, let’s get started…First of all, here is the Princess Patter for that day:
We had also gotten this pamphlet when we first boarded, this gives a list of all of the excursions that were available in Honolulu–We had already made our excursion reservations online before we set sail.
Also, at every port, we got this nice little pamphlet to give us more information about where we were going to be visiting.
The day before we pulled into port, we had received this letter explaining how things would work on our excursion-stringent rules that I was actually quite glad to see. As well, on our excursion tickets, we were asked to dress appropriately…no bathing suits or shorts with holes in them etc…I was really glad to see that too…We were going to a hallowed place, not the beach, and not somewhere that was necessarily going to be fun.
Here is what I chose to wear for this day:
Here was our ticket for our time to see the 20-minute documentary film depicting the attack on Pearl Harbor…We would have time to visit 2 museums onsite before and after the film and subsequent motor launch ride over to the Arizona Memorial.
Here was our motor coach for the day, the bus driver was absolutely awesome, she told story after story, I was brought to tears so many times while listening to her–she also made me laugh too. She was the perfect person to narrate our trip (Princess does such a great job at choosing these companies and their personnel…honestly, they really do).
In route, we caught our first glimpse of the Arizona memorial, we took this picture from the bus:
We parked and we started our tour…
Here are some pictures of the two museums, the first one was “Road to War” and the second one was “Attack”:
I was quite touched as I walked through those two museums, they are very well done!
Next it was time to go and see the 20 minute documentary film–I did not take pictures of that probably because I was quite moved. After the film was over, it was time to take the boat over to the Arizona Memorial.
This is a picture of the type of boat that you ride in over to the Arizona–They run two such boats, this was the one we saw as it was making its way back as we were moving toward the monument in an identical boat:
They pull you up right beside the Memorial…This is a very solemn trip for most including my hubby and I…
To this day, people are still put to rest in the Arizona:
You can still see oil leaking out of the ship:
And the most touching part of the Memorial was this the Honor Wall:
As you read in the first couple of paragraphs of this blog post, I think that you all realize how important this day was to me. I admit that I’m a very patriotic person and I am very proud to be an American. As Americans, when our citizens are hurt, we are all hurt on some level, so touring this Memorial was quite a ‘moment’ in my life for me. All that said, I’m now going to get a little bit negative in my statements here…Just warning you beforehand. I’d appreciate no judgement being hurled my way after the following statements are read, but I cannot remain silent on this issue, so here goes: Now, we all know that I’m the “Selfie Queen”, I’m forever taking Selfies here, there, and everywhere. BUT, you will NOT see a selfie of me in front of this wall, in fact, we had to wait for quite a long time before we could get a picture of this wall without someone standing in front of it SMILING and WHOOPING and HOLLERING while taking their selfies. I was appalled, absolutely appalled at some peoples nonchalant attitudes and their complete disrespect of this most solemn place. It was incredible to me. Now, I realize that we are Americans and that this site might affect us a bit more than some other countries residents…BUT, I would hope that if we traveled and toured a similar site in another country, that we would be respectful and solemn while experiencing such a place. After I saw that display of complete ignorance and disrespect to our fallen, I turned around and got in line and waited quietly in tears for our ride back…While I was standing there waiting, I took this picture…GOD BLESS AMERICA and God Bless all of our fallen warriors and all of those who perished when Pearl Harbor was attacked…
If you’d like to know more about the Arizona Memorial, click here.
Okay, I’m finished with my rant…Onward we go with our day in Honolulu…Now that we had experienced the beginning of the war, we were now on our way over to Mighty Mo to experience the end of the war. Aboard the Missouri is where Japanese envoys Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and Gen. Yoshijiro Umezu signed their surrender on September 2, 1945 while in Tokyo Bay.
We were given a guided tour and were told all about the Missouri’s illustrious battle career, if you’d like to read more about Mighty Mo, check out this link.
This is one of the guns used to shoot down Kamikazes…
And the Surrender papers…
We then headed back to our motor coach, I was bushed to be honest…more emotionally than physically of course. I was so glad that we came, but, it affected me greatly. Our bus driver took us passed the submarine the USS Bowfin on our way back to our ship…
And here is my hubby’s birthplace, Tripler Army Medical Center. 🙂 Yep, my hubby was born in Hawaii! 🙂
When we got back to our ship, instead of climbing right back aboard, we took a little walk…We saw these gorgeous flowers…
And I’m not sure if any of you saw the “Dirty Jobs” show were Mike Rowe was cleaning windows in Honolulu…Well, here is the hotel where he was working on said windows…
Here is the Star Princess from a distance…Goodness she really is a beauty (I know I say that every time I show a picture of her…hahaha…I’m nothing if not repetitive on that note). 😉
Our day in Honolulu was coming to an end and we were pulling away from the dock and setting sail for Kauai. It had been a day that I’ll never, ever forget as long as I live. I feel so lucky and blessed that I was able to walk on that hallowed ground. The next time we go to Honolulu, maybe we’ll go and see a waterfall or a volcano or something more vacation’ee, but, I will never regret our tours of the Arizona Memorial and Mighty Mo. One more time, I must say…God Bless America! ❤
***One more thing. 🙂 Here is a video that I created of our day in Honolulu after I had finished writing my Hawaii Blog—I also have a YouTube Travel Channel (Arlynn’s Travels):
I have to admit, that I was pretty excited to wake up on the morning we were to be in Hilo and look out our balcony door and see something *other* than an endlessly stretching ocean. 😉 We had greatly enjoyed our 5 sea days, but, I was more than ready to place my feet on solid ground for a little while. Here was our view when we awoke that morning…
Before I get started telling you about our Hilo excursion, I want to let you know one thing that I neglected to mention in my other posts. As you travel to and from the Hawaiian Islands, in our case from Vancouver, you will lose 3 hours going and then you’ll gain that 3 hours coming back. In your first Princess Patter of the trip, you will have this nifty little cheat sheet (I hung this up on our wall along with our Itinerary) so that I’d have it to reference.
Princess is very good at placing these little “clock” reminders on your bed on nights that you need to adjust your clocks and watches…
Okie dokie, now moving on with our morning on the day we arrived in Hilo. There was a bit of business that needed to be conducted on this morning. Because we had sailed out of a ‘foreign’ port and were entering the United States, we had to go to an Immigration Inspection…OH joy, joy! I know it is a necessity, but, I will admit, I was a wee bit frustrated that we, as Americans, had to go through this process. I know, I know, it is a necessity and I’m grateful for the stringent USA rules…They help to keep us safe. 🙂 We had received a letter in our mailbox the day prior to docking in Hilo that required us to meet in the Princess Theatre at 7am and they simply took us row by row and scanned our cruise cards, took a look at our Passports, and then gave us this card (that we had to keep with us while in all Ports)…
Okie dokie…We were ready to embark on our day!! YaY!! Let me show you the Princess Patter for the day we were in Hilo and then we’ll head off on our Waterfall excursion…
There are many excursions that you can take while in Hilo, and to be honest, we had reserved an all day excursion before we set sail. Unfortunately, my stupid feet and ankles were so swollen that there was no way that I could have done all that we had had planned to do. The first thing that we did to help my feet was my hubby insisted that I purchase these pretty pink shoes in one of the shops on board (before we docked of course) because my poor feet wouldn’t fit in the sneakers that I had brought along. These shoes also came in black, dove gray, and a charcoal gray color…I’m such a girlie girl, and I knew that some of my outfits would match nicely and hopefully help me look ‘pretty in pink’. 😉
These shoes were admittedly pricy ($68 I believe), BUT, they were SO comfy cozy and perfect for me. (My feet did finally shrink back down to normal after I drank a copious amount of water and kept tight shoes off of my feet–days later). Here is the outfit that I paired with these cute shoes:
Here is an example of the excursion paperwork that you’ll get when you get on the ship, you’ll have plenty of time to go through it and read about all of the excursions available at, in this case, Hilo. Some of the excursions fill up pretty quickly because a lot of people (like us) pre-reserve online via the Cruise Personalizer, but, trust me, there are still some available after you board the ship.
We were very lucky in that we were able to switch our excursion from an all-day event that would have really taxed my poor feet, to one that was a bit less strenuous and a 4 hour adventure. Here is the excursion that we ended up taking, and it was lovely…
We simply went to the Shore Excursions office on board and they were so accommodating and wonderful–GREAT crew on the Star!! We even were refunded a bit of money because the excursion we chose to take was a bit less expensive than our original choice.
All righty, it was time for us to leave for our Excursion, so off we went (Cruise card, Passport, and Immigration card in hand), the first place that we saw when we got off of the ship was a big warehouse type building that had all of the different excursion guides standing there holding signs. You showed your excursion ‘tickets’ (that I didn’t take a picture of) and you were pointed to your ‘holding area’. While we were waiting to depart on our adventure, we had a little bit of entertainment. These 4 ladies were quite talented and welcomed us with a bit of ukulele music and hula flair. 🙂
Our little tour guide Jessica came to collect us and she led us out to our mode of transportation for the day, a 15 passenger van. 🙂
Jessica was a very sweet lady and she was full of information about Hilo and was filling our heads with all of that wonderful info as we started our tour…
Our first stop was at Onomea Bay, so pretty and calm…
Our next stop was Akaka Falls State Park. We traversed about a mile down many steps and then back up many steps (they do have an easier/shorter trail to get to the Falls, but, I of course wanted to do the stairs–silly me…it was challenging with my bad knees, but, I soldiered on to the falls… Jessica told me that she didn’t believe me when I said I bad knees because I motored along pretty quickly…go me). 😉 The trail runs through a rainforest and was just breathtakingly gorgeous.
Here are some pictures that we took along the way to the Falls:
Akaka Falls finally came into view…JUST beautiful!!
Akaka Falls drops 422 feet!! WOW!!! I was mesmerized and again reminded how small we are…It was majestically gorgeous. We were allowed to view the falls for quite a little while and everyone took pictures and selfies and sat in a little gazebo type thing before making the trek back to the van. Yes, my knees were aching a bit, but, it was well worth the little hike…and it was good exercise for me too. 🙂
Once we got back out to the van, Jessica provided us with nice cool rags and a snack. She had this wonderful tasting juice (along with other choices)…gosh, I really enjoyed drinking that down, so refreshing. 🙂
After we were finished our snack and drink, we piled back into the van and our next stop was Rainbow Falls:
The walk to Rainbow Falls was much less strenuous, pretty much, it sits right next to the parking lot. There is a set of steps that you can go up and look down on the top of the Falls…The hubby did that, I chose not to traverse up more stairs. 🙂
While I was sauntering around and viewing Rainbow Falls–so so pretty…I came across Hawaii’s State flower…The yellow Hibiscuses
It was now time to depart Rainbow Falls, at this point, I said to myself that I was really glad that we didn’t do the all-day excursion…I was pretty bushed honestly, but I was a happy, happy lady because I was seeing HAWAII!!! WHAT? I was so lucky. 🙂
Jessica took us back to ‘town’, and gave us the opportunity to sample some local Macadamia Nuts that are made right there on the Island…And we bought a bag of them as well. 🙂
We were then given time to walk around town a bit and do some shopping and exploring.
I thought this was just the prettiest Christmas ornament…
Here is the Farmer’s Market…Unfortunately, we were there on a Sunday and not all of the venders set up their wares on Sundays…Most of what was out on our day was food…But, it was interesting to see.
One of the most beautiful sites that we saw on Hilo was the Banyan trees…They are huge and gorgeous and EVERYwhere on Hilo. Also, a lot of the Banyan trees have been planted by famous people such as Amelia Earhart and Babe Ruth.
Back up for a second to Akaka Falls, I give a bit of commentary about the Banyan trees and you can also see some more of those lovely steps that lead to those Falls. 🙂
We also saw a little piggy running by…lol…I definitely chucked at that site. 😉
The only other critter we saw was this little fella…
It was time to load back into the Van and head back to the ship…I clicked off one last picture before heading back…
Here is a picture of the ship from the Van…
And when we got back to our ship, I was able to click off this picture…How pretty is the Star Princess? I’d say very, very pretty. 🙂
We greatly enjoyed our day in Hilo, we learned all about the “Big Island”, we saw a gorgeous waterfall while walking through a lush rain forest. We saw a Rainbow as we gazed upon another set of waterfalls, and we ‘felt’ Hilo and it’s folk (sweet as can be) as we did a little exploring and shopping on our own. All in all, a wonderful day!!
We got back to the ship and I sat out on our balcony for a while before we headed off to dinner at the buffet…This was my view:
It was time to sail away from this beautiful place, the sunset that evening did not disappoint…
Aloha Hilo, I hope to gaze upon you once again one day…
Our next stop was Honolulu, here is a sneak peek and link:
One more thing. 🙂 Here is a video that I created of our day in Hilo after I had finished writing my Hawaii Blog—I also have a YouTube Travel Channel (Arlynn’s Travels):
I’ve tried to wrap my brain around the very best way to describe this Princess cruise for all of you wonderful folks out there and I think I’ve come up with a way to do so without confusing you too much and not getting bogged down with every little detail. This cruise was a long one and we had 10 sea days on our Itinerary, 5 days while in transit to the Islands and 5 days after visiting the Islands while cruising back to Vancouver. I *was* going to write one post per sea day for you, but, I decided against doing that for fear that it might get a little tedious for all of us. So moving forward my blog posts will go as follows:
First, in this entry, I’ll cover the first day on board and all “At Sea” Days
Next, I’ll write blog posts for each Island (4 separate posts)
Then, I’ll write a “Ship Tour” entry
And finally, I’ll write one last blog giving my all-over impressions of this cruise
Once again, here was our Itinerary:
So let’s get started with our very first day on board. Embarkation, as with every cruise we’ve ever done through Princess went off without a hitch, they truly do run like a well-oiled machine and they are quite efficient. The first things that you are handed as you step up to your Princess Representative in the embarkation center (usually a large cruise terminal) is your room card and a little map of the ship (folded up to be the same size as your cruise card):
Here is my room card, as you can see, I have a sticker on my card, that simply tells the waiters that I purchased a “Soda & More” package which includes unlimited fountain soft drinks, plus mocktails, juices, and complimentary hot chocolate throughout your cruise. It also includes milkshakes and specialty ice cream at the ice cream shoppe on board.
I will usually carry my cruise card in my pocket or dare I say stuck down in my bra (which doesn’t look too attractive or appropriate when pulling it out to show it to your waiter <yikes>!!!) 😉 SO, this time, I purchased a blingy lanyard on board and the cashier punched a hole in my card and I was good to go.
Here are some pictures of that spiffy little map:
Okie dokie, so we were ready to go and find our Mini-Suite and to get started with our cruise. Here is a link to a video I created, it is a pretty detailed stateroom tour showing you every aspect of the Mini-Suite aboard the Star Princess.
We had made some purchases via our “Cruise Personalizer” on Princess.com months ago, so these little cards were waiting for us on the bed when we entered our Stateroom:
As you can see, these cards specifically indicated that we had purchased the “Unlimited Soda & More” package and an “Internet Cafe” package. Obviously, my soda and more package had been taken care of already with my cruise card, but, when we got to our room, this nice cup was there waiting for me as well:
We needed to carry the Internet card to the Internet Cafe and we worked with a Princess fella to set up our onboard account and we got a little education on how the internet worked. NOTE: IF any of you ever get an Internet package, when you are finished browsing, never forget to “Logout” (!!!), because if you do forget, your minutes will tick right away while you are out and about enjoying dinner, dancing and whatever else suits your fancy. 🙂 I cannot stress how important it is to make sure you have logged out.
Here is a little tip for you, as you can see in the picture above, it instructs you to go to “logout.com” in your browser bar. Well, I would do that, but, there were times where it did not tell me that I was logged out, in those instances I went back to the screen below and hit the logout button at which time my remaining minutes would appear which gave me the assurance that I was indeed logged out.
All that said, the Internet is not too awful slow, there were times that I couldn’t log on, but honestly that very seldom happened. I actually managed to upload some pictures to my personal Facebook page every day, I was pretty happy about that.
Okay, moving on through our first day–Next was our Muster Drill–A bit of business that has to be completed before the ship can pull away from the dock. Your muster drill “Station” is stamped on your cruise card…
And you can always find where you are to go on the back of your Stateroom’s door:
A little info about the Muster Drill for you. First, on every single Princess cruise that we’ve been on the Muster Drill has always taken place inside…no lining up on outside decks. All of the Muster Stations are located on Deck 7-The Promenade deck (where the lifeboats are hung from) and all stations are located in and around the restaurants/bars/venues on that deck. On your first Princess Patter that should be either on your bed or in your little mailbox outside your stateroom door when you arrive will tell you what time the drill will be happening…it is mandatory that you go to this drill, so set your watch. My suggestion is that you start heading to your particular muster station no less than 30 minutes before it is set to begin (take a crossword puzzle book to work or book to read). This way, you’ll be assured to get a seat—AND—don’t forget to take your life jacket which can be found on the closet shelf, you must have it with you and demonstrate that you can put it on correctly. Your cruise card will be scanned while at the drill so that they can be assured that you’ve participated. 🙂
(Of course, this is the one time that I didn’t have my handy-dandy camera around my neck, so I have NO pictures to share with you of the drill itself…erg to me eh?!!)
Okay, NOW that that business is ALL over, you can start to enjoy your cruise. I always want to get unpacked and of course we want to eat..haha…So that is how I finished out our first day, I unpacked and put everything in its place (you can see all of the “Must Haves” that I spread about our room here at this link). And then we hit the buffet for dinner.
Bye bye Vancouver…see ya in 15 days! 🙂
Here is a little video that I have loaded on my You Tube travel Channel (Arlynn’s Travels) of our sail away–just going under the Lion’s Gate Bridge:
As you can see by all of the information that I just imparted, I can tend to get bogged down in the details. I’m thinking y’all don’t need to see every single thing that we did on every single sea day on our cruise, so I am just going to try to give you the ‘feeling’ of some of the things that we did…
First, I’ll start by showing you my Sea Day outfits as that has been a huge request from some of you lovely ladies out there. 🙂 Again, I am NO fashionista, and I am admittedly a plus-sized girl, BUT, I do love to try to look nice and stylish. I am one of those people who really tries to adhere to the “smart casual” dress code onboard. There are times when a bathing suit is worn to and from the pool and such and of course that is fine, but, you will rarely see me in inappropriate attire in any of the eating venues. As well, the hubby and I do not participate in formal nights, but, we will usually do one of the specialty restaurants on those evenings and yes, we do dress a little nicer than “smart casual” no matter the evening we go to those venues. SO anyway, here is my “AT SEA” wardrobe.
The first 5 days as we traveled to the Hawaiian Islands
As you will see, I dressed warmly for the first 3 day as it was *quite* chilly, and then my outfits started to ‘lighten up’ as we neared the more tropical climate:
And here are the 5 outfits that I wore after we departed the Hawaiian Islands, as you can see, I started out very tropical and then moved back into the warmer outfits with scarves to pretty up those plain shirts, ending the cruise how I began it in that pretty little coral jacket (I just love that jacket!!):
Okie dokie…I’ll now try to give you a little sampling of some of the things that we did on Sea Days while on board. As I mentioned in my first blog in this Hawaiian Cruise series “Hawaii: Packing, Dinner with Dear Friends, and Embarkation”, we were a bit skeptical seeing all of those sea days looming ahead of us. We’d only done Alaskan cruises before this cruise and there is literally only one ‘at sea’ day on the Southbound Voyage of the Glaciers cruise (btw, I’ve done an entire series of blog post describing that Alaskan cruise. Here is a link to the first entry and there are links at the end of each one that will take you to the next post/day). Honestly though, we did okay with all of those sea days. The first thing I’ll show you is the Princess Patter for one of the sea days:
The sea days were all similar in nature, of course some things would change as the days passed, i.e. the entertainment for the day, or the movie playing on the big screen on deck, or the dress code among other things. They also offered Hawaiian themed seminars with the Naturalist on board Sherry:
And they have a married couple Brian and Rowena who host different classes, i.e. ukulele at sea class, or a lei making class (I tried to get into that one, but honestly, it was a MAD house, so I figured it would just stress me out and I have every confidence that being a crafter, if I want to make a lei at some point that I can certainly do so without instruction). Brian & Rowena are very talented though, along with teaching the classes, they would perform in the Piazza at times as well:
We had ice cream almost every day…
Yes, the first few days at sea were very chilly…
And a couple of them were quite wavy and rough…fun times for us though as we don’t suffer from seasickness…thank goodness. 🙂
We still managed to make it to the buffet though…Several times. 😉
We also went to the Portifino Dining Room (for Anytime diners) for breakfast…Honestly, they never had anything on the menu for dinner that met our fancy—Don’t judge please, I’ve heard others rave about the food, and I’m sure it is very good, if it is something that you like to begin with. 🙂 As a whole the food on board any Princess ship is very, very good.
Definition of “Anytime Dining” is as follows…Pulled straight from Princess.com:
“Anytime Dining allows you the freedom to eat with whomever you wish, and whenever you like – just as you would at a fine restaurant – between 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. You can have a table for two one evening and join a group for a festive meal the next. The choice is yours”.
Here was the breakfast menu in the Portifino which is one of the Main Dining Rooms set aside for Anytime Dining:
And here was my breakfast one morning:
There was always duty-free shopping to do onboard, here is an example of the flyer that would come with the Patter each day:
Here is a smattering of just some of the things that I purchased while onboard:
More ice-cream you say? Yes please!!
How about a milkshake (‘free’ for me because of my Soda and More package) YUM!!:
We enjoyed some absolutely gorgeous sunrises and sunsets…
I got my fingernails done…
We watched an ice carving demonstration. 🙂
We enjoyed walking around the gorgeous Star Princess…Here I am sitting on the side of the aft pool:
And here is one shot of the Piazza:
And, we relaxed:
Last but not least, our Stateroom Steward “Bobby” went above and beyond for us on this cruise. He was absolutely excellent! I was so surprised when we arrived back in our Stateroom after dinner on our 1st sea day heading back to Vancouver, Bobby had taken the time to make us this:
Bobby probably heard me squealing after I entered the room and saw this little fellow. I ran to find Bobby and I thanked him profusely–This was the very first towel animal that we’ve ever received on any Princess cruise…I was over the moon…It’s the little things you know?!!
As each day passed, Bobby kept getting more and more creative with his towel creations…Here are some of the others that he made for us as we sailed back to Vancouver. 🙂
And, yes, as is Princess’ practice, we still got our chocolates every evening:
We also went to see the comedian on board “Steve White”, watched a couple of movies, among many other little things at different venues. Sea Days aren’t so bad after all!!! 😉
Hilo, Hawaii was our first Port of Call, so that is what I’ll tell you about in my next entry. Here is a sneak peek and link:
What? It was finally time to pack?!! Really?! I was doing the happy dance at that prospect, I had been planning, gathering, and organizing for months and months readying us for this wonderful 15-night Hawaiian cruise through the Princess Cruise line. 🙂
So let’s not waste any more time with me chatting aimlessly away, let me show you quickly what my packing looked like. As I mentioned in my “What’s In My Carry On, My Must Have’s, & Packing Tips and Tricks” blog entry, I had all of those spiffy packing cubes and a packing envelope to utilize, and utilize them I did to the fullest capacity. I was able to take twice as many outfits than I usually take and they came in completely handy considering that we were embarking on an ‘ever weather changing’ type of cruise.
Here is our Itinerary:
As you can see, we cruised out of Vancouver, B.C. and we had 5 sea days on the front and back ends of this cruise, so I knew I’d need some warmer clothing to cover what I figured would be cooler days. I’d also obviously need warmer clothing once we got to the more tropical (gorgeous) climate in Hawaii.
So here is how I got everything packed up–You can take a look at my “Hawaii Cruise Wardrobe Choices” to see exactly what I packed.
I fit a plethora of tops in that envelope, I know I had over 20 of them in there, along with a light-weight knit blazer. I was thrilled!!
Next, I utilized one of the large packing cubes for all of my slacks and capris:
I utilized the other packing cubes for all of my unmentionables, socks, and pjs…Here is what my large suitcase looked like, it all fit beautifully!
I then packed up my smaller suitcase with all of my Must Haves using great care to wrap some of the breakable items in bubble wrap and/or paper towels to pad everything nicely…Have y’all seen how those airport folks toss your luggage around? Yeah, I didn’t want to have my perfume broken or a bottle of fingernail polish shattered, so I did take some time to make sure everything was nicely and succinctly packed. 🙂
So, I was all ready to roll! Our flight was at 7am the next morning and we had to leave our house at about 3:15am in order to get to the airport, get parked, go through security, and well, y’all know the drill. Our daughter Christin came over to our house and moved in…bless her heart, she took great care of our home and our dogs while we were away. She and I sat up and chatted until it was time for me to jump into the shower at about 2am…I was SO excited, I could not sleep…thankfully, my hubby was able to snooze a bit before we left for the airport.
Okay, so it was *finally* time to leave our house and head to the airport; I was completely ready, but, I had to say my last goodbye to these three sweet pups…When they look at you like this, it makes it really hard to walk out:
BUT, I managed to muster up the strength to leave these sweet things and so the hubby and I headed out for our grand adventure…BUT, wait, we had to drive through a bit of snow when we were on our way to the airport…Snow? In April?! UGH I guess stranger things have happened, but, not many around these parts..haha…
So, we finally made it to the airport, through security, and we were waiting to board our flight…and, I remembered I hadn’t taken a picture of my outfit–one thing that I’ve promised y’all I would do…SO, what did I do, I went and found a full-length mirror in the bathroom at the airport and took this…LOL…I can hear y’all chuckling right now. 😉 A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do you know?! 😉
That was my traveling outfit…I’m so glad I had that light jacket on because it was freezing on the plane and it was quite chilly when we got to Vancouver. I also dressed a little nicer than I might have otherwise done because we were going to be meeting my dear friend Liz and her hubby for dinner that evening and I knew this outfit would carry over to that event nicely. 🙂
Thankfully, our flights–we had two, we had a bit of a layover in Denver–were uneventful, everything was on time, and the weather was perfect for flying. Gosh those rocky mountains were just gorgeous too…
We landed at the Vancouver, B.C. airport at around 1:30pm (losing 3 hours as we traveled across the USA) and then Princess took over. 🙂 I love using Princess transfers because even through they might be a bit pricey, using them takes the worry out of how you are going to get from point A to point B. So we gathered our luggage and then made our way to customs–pretty painless process, and then we found our Princess rep right there waiting for us, she took us straight to a taxi and handed the driver a voucher to show him where he was to take us and that also served as his payment.
We did tip him when he got us to our destination, the Four Seasons Hotel (accommodations also arranged through Princess):
Our room was lovely and very well appointed:
The hotel’s ‘bell-hop’ for lack of a better word delivered our suitcases almost immediately:
And here was our view:
It was time for us to head out to meet Liz and her hubby for dinner, they were staying at a hotel down the street (bless their hearts, they had taken one of the B.C. Ferries over to Vancouver from their home in Victoria and stayed the night there JUST so that we could spend some time together—how sweet was *that*?!!). 🙂
WAIT: Before I continue on, Liz took this picture of our cruise ship the Star Princess before they left their home on Vancouver Island (Victoria). Yes, she *can* see the cruise ships come and go from her back deck…how awesome is that?!!
Okay, to continue on, the hubby and I decided to walk on over to their hotel. 🙂 It was SO good to see Liz again, I just hugged and hugged her. 🙂
And we sat and chatted for quite a long time before heading to a lovely Italian restaurant for dinner:
Then off to dinner we went we dined at Al Porto and boy was it ever delicious!
After dinner the hubby and I went back to our hotel and fell straight to sleep…As I mentioned earlier, we had lost 3 hours flying across to that coast and we were pretty bushed. 🙂
When we awoke the next morning, we were excited, first because we were meeting Liz and her hubby for breakfast at our hotel, and second, we’d then be off to our cruise ship to embark on our Hawaiian journey…Here is my outfit for this day’s adventures:
We had a lovely time with our now VERY dear friends at breakfast. It was so nice to be able to spend some good quality time chatting and enjoying one-another’s company. My hubby and I are very blessed and lucky to have them in our lives…<3
It was time to say goodbye to Liz and her hubby…OH the bittersweet feeling I felt, and yes, I was a bawling baby when they were driving away and Liz’zy was blowing us kisses…
I know we will see them again…hopefully sooner than later!!!
***Thank you for coming over to Vancouver Liz, I loved seeing you, hugging you, and getting to spend time with you–you are very special to me!! MWAH!!
Before long it was time for us to meet our motor coach (another Princess transfer) out in front of our hotel:
While we were at breakfast, the Princess folks had come and collected our luggage and they had secured our bags along with all of the others’ bags that would be transferred from the hotel to the ship that was moored up at Canada Place not too far away. 🙂
Princess is so efficient and organized…honestly, they leave nothing to chance and take such good care of you. 🙂
We were off to find our cruise ship now, here was our first glimpse of the Star Princess, I took this from the motor coach:
The embarkation process was pretty painless, although we were among the very first travelers on board the ship, so we had to wait in a holding area for about 1/2 hour before we were able to board:
Here we are in line waiting to take our first step onto the ship:
The very first place we went was to our Stateroom, Mini-Suite D620–I’ve created a video tour of our room, here is the link if you’d like to take a look-see…I tried to be very thorough in my description. 🙂 Here are some pictures:
And here I am standing on our nice-sized balcony (that yes, is open to above, there is no covering over it–which is fine with us). 🙂
And it was time to set-sail toward Hawaii–We’d be “at sea” for the next 5 days and I will admit that I wasn’t quite sure what we’d be doing for 5 days at sea (not to mention the 5 at sea days returning…haha), but, I think you’ll see as we move through my blog posts that Princess definitely fills up the hours nicely. 🙂
Here is a video of us leaving Canada Place and I also give a quick Stateroom Tour of MiniSuite D620:
Bye bye land, we would not see one iota of land for the next 5 days…
I cannot tell you how excited I was to finally be on that cruise ship and on our way to the beautiful Hawaiian islands. 🙂 For my next entry, I will describe those sea days. 🙂
