Burlap Christmas/Winter Wreath with White and Silver Accents

I am still itching to start decorating for Christmas and since I practically recreate the wheel when I decorate, I have decided to decorate my powder room with a more neutral woodsy feel, I am going to try to use accent pieces that will transition nicely from Christmas to Winter; I’d like to keep it in place until Spring. This wreath was my first and will of course be my largest contribution to said powder room decor. 🙂

I found the burlap that I used at Walmart, it is h-e-a-v-y duty stuff, and trust me, will definitely hold its shape beautifully.  The burlap has white ‘flocking’ in the shape of pinecones stamped all over it which makes it quite stiff and honestly, I did struggle with it a bit, I just *might* have said a choice word or two to myself while struggling; but, the struggle was worth it in the end. I gathered all of the accent pieces to compliment that burlap.  I chose a coordinating burlap ribbon with silver snowflakes, a grapevine & white angel, silver and white pinecone ornaments, and silver and white berry beads.

Here is how I put it all together:

I started with a 16″ work wreath with silver chenille twist ties already attached…

IMG_2282

I used every single bit of both rolls of this burlap…

IMG_2284Version 2

I made this bow out of coordinating burlap ribbon:

IMG_2283

And then I started to put it all together; if you’d like to see how I put my burlap or deco mesh wreaths together, here are a couple of links:  Burlap Woodlands Wreath and Christmas Deco Mesh Wreath…If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to leave them in the comments below, I’d be glad to try and help anyone who might need a little assistance. 🙂

IMG_2286 IMG_2287 IMG_2288

I cut strips of the coordinating burlap ribbon into 8″ strips, cut the ends into points and attached a tuft of two to every-other twist tie on the outer ring of the form…IMG_2290 IMG_2294 IMG_2296

Then I spread them out to kind of look like a snowflake…

IMG_2297

Next, I hot glued pipe cleaners to the back of this angel (purchased at Hobby Lobby for 50% off) and I tied her onto the wreath form.  I knew she’d be too heavy and using hot glue alone would cause the burlap to sag; adding the pipe cleaners helped to secure her into place…

IMG_2300

Then I hot glued these pinecone ornaments into place
IMG_2299

Next, I attached the bow and accented it with the berry beads by weaving it through the bow loops…
IMG_2302

IMG_2308 (1)

I placed berry beads around the angel as well and called it done…

IMG_2308 (2)

Here is the finished wreath, it cost me in the neighborhood of $35 to make, only because the box of those pinecone ornaments cost $10.  I purchased them at our local Home Goods store and that store hardly ever has ‘clearance’ items or offers a percentage off, but I loved the look of them and they were perfect for this wreath, so I cringed and purchased:

IMG_2315

It will replace this wreath…

IMG_2314IMG_2313

Now I will start to collect a few other accent pieces with which to decorate the rest of the room. I’m going to try to stick with whites and silvers only…I might throw a touch of burgundy in there in a few places…not sure exactly what I’ll come up with quite yet. I *love* the creative process though. 🙂

Until next time, y’all take good care! ❤

Whimsical Burlap Wreath (For My Daughter)

My daughter Christin asked me to make her a wreath! What?! I was so touched and humbled…honestly.  She is a lovely decorator and I love the look she has created in her home, her decor is much more modern and, as she puts it, minimalistic than mine. So, as we were perusing around Hobby Lobby yesterday (buying paint for her students to use to make their parents’ Christmas gifts; 2016 calendars) she eyed some ribbon that she just loved and this picture.  **Side note:  I am one very proud Mama, Christin is an awesome teacher, one that interacts with her students beautifully! She regularly provides them with interactive projects–the very essence of “learning through doing’.  She makes learning fun and interesting and her students adore her every single year!  Yes, yes, one proud Mama am I…**

IMG_2259

She knew she wanted a burlap wreath and she knew she wanted the accent color to be gold and that pretty teal’y’ green. So we started to build her wreath, here are the accents we chose to accompany this picture and to help to incorporate those colors…

Of course we needed the burlap and a coordinating ribbon, Christin loved that cream with gold polka-dots, so we went with it…IMG_2264

This stuff looked interesting, very glittery, and so pretty, and it was the right color, so we scooped it up…

IMG_2252

She loves gerber daisies as much as I do I think, she chose these in that pretty blue’ish’ color…

IMG_2256

She also loves butterflies, so we grabbed up some of these glittery ones in teal and gold…

IMG_2253 IMG_2254

We picked up that gold “C” and some gold berries and we were ready to go…

IMG_2260

IMG_2265

The first thing I did was make a bow…

IMG_2278

Next, I gathered up a 16″ work wreath (which only means that the chenille twist ties came already attached to the wreath form)…We had picked this up on our shopping spree as well.  It was on sale in the Christmas department for 40% off…

IMG_2250

So here we go, I attached the burlap into the twist ties on the outer ring of the wreath form, making loops of about 10″ and working my way around.  I then transitioned onto the inner ring and worked my way all around in the same manner making loops about the same size (I used one entire bolt of burlap and a little bit of another one)…

IMG_2267 IMG_2268

Then I attached the teal colored burlap to every-other twist tie moving from the inner to the outer ring as I worked my way around the wreath…

IMG_2269

As I have done before, I hot glued pipe cleaners to the back of the wooden picture and to the back of the letter “C” so that I could securely attach both pieces to the wreath (only hot gluing them would not hold them on top of the burlap–they’d slip and slide around too much without being tied on).  I neglected to take pictures of me doing that this time…I’m so sorry…:/  If you want to see how I did that to other pieces, you can check out my Burlap “Woodlands” Wreath blog post.  Anyway, those were the first two things that I attached to the wreath, and then I started arranging the rest of the accent pieces, moving them around and tweaking until I liked how it looked.  I then hot glued everything into place.

After all of the accents were attached, it needed a little something more, so I took whatever ribbon I had left and made several tufts made up of three 8″ pieces of ribbon; I cut the ends in a ‘V’ shape and attached each tuft to every twist tie on the outer ring…

IMG_2272 IMG_2273 IMG_2275IMG_2271

Here is the finished wreath…

Version 2 Version 2 IMG_2276

IMG_2276

Christin seems quite happy with the finished product and so am I, it turned out to be a pretty, whimsical, fun wreath. 🙂  I’m sure she will find a lovely place to hang it in her home.  I love making things for folks; people keep telling me that I should open an Etsy shop and sell my wreaths…I tell them that I have no desire to do that, making things in bulk does nothing but stifle my creative juices and I know in the end, I’d come to hate making wreaths,  I definitely don’t want to get to that point, so I will continue to create them for myself and whatever family members or friends might desire one.

Until next time, y’all take good care!! ❤

Burlap “Woodlands” Wreath for Winter

Hi Y’all,

It is that time of the year when I start gearing up to make a few things to add to my Christmas decor and since we’ve only lived in this new house for a couple of years, I’m still gathering, creating, and building up choices with which to decorate for the Holidays.  I headed to my happy place Hobby Lobby today to gather materials to make a wreath for the inside of my front door to be used with my Christmas decorations.

As I was searching–really wandering around aimlessly– I came across these platinum gold’ish’ flowers that looked kind of like poinsettias, the same color beads, and a pick with leaves and sparkly beads. Every single thing that I bought was 40% off today…

IMG_2107 IMG_2099 IMG_2101

Then I found these really cute resin owls in the same color scheme:

IMG_2091IMG_2093

I fell in love with all of that stuff so my entire plan for that wreath changed.   Instead of me making an ‘in your face’ Christmas wreath (using that pretty country green that I use as an accent color in that part of the house), it turned into kind of a “Woodlands” wintery wreath which I think will pair beautifully with all of my Christmas decor.  I can always incorporate some of the green color later if I want to do so, but for now, I’m completely pleased with how it turned out. 🙂

Here is how I made this wreath:

I used a 24″ wreath form with the pipe cleaners already attached:

IMG_2089 IMG_2090

You’ll need 2 skeins of Burlap ‘runner’ for this sized wreath form…

IMG_2094

I hot glued pipe cleaners on the back of both owls so that I could ‘tie’ them onto the wreath–I knew that they’d be too heavy to glue into place…

IMG_2096IMG_2097IMG_2098

The first thing I did was to attach the burlap, I unrolled most of the skein, gathered the end and started placing it into one of the pipe cleaners on the outside of the wreath form. I then made a large loop (probably at least 10″ long) and caught it into the next pipe cleaner on the outer ring of the wreath form.  I continued making loops around the entire outer ring of the wreath form; I used an entire skein for this row…

IMG_2109 IMG_2111

I then opened the other skein and started working in the same manner around the inner ring…

IMG_2115IMG_2116

I used most of the 2nd skein on the inner row; you can see in the picture below how much I had left over…IMG_2118

This size wreath form makes a huge wreath, it literally is almost as wide as my front door and it measures 30″ around…

IMG_2114

I then made a bow out of this chevron burlap ribbon…Here is a link to my “How to make a bow tutorial” video…

IMG_2121

And then I proceeded to catch the remaining chevron ribbon in pipe cleaners.  I caught it in every other twist tie moving from the outer ring to the inner ring then back out to the outer ring’s pipe cleaners working my way around the entire wreath.

After I was finished adding in the chevron ribbon, I placed my bow where I wanted it on the wreath, then I tied the owls on, and started placing the flowers.  There is no rhyme or reason or pattern to this part of the wreath making process, you just need to let your creative juices flow and place the flowers where you think they look pretty.  I then hot-glued everything in place for security (sometimes I won’t do that, but those poinsettias were rather heavy and I didn’t want them to fall out)…

IMG_2123 IMG_2124 IMG_2125 IMG_2126

After I was finished tweaking it–took me a few minutes to get it exactly how I wanted it, I hung it up on my foyer door.  I’m completely happy with how it turned out and I will probably leave it up there through Christmas and the Winter months.

IMG_2133 IMG_2132 IMG_2131

IMG_9335 IMG_9336

It just goes to show you that even my best laid plans can turn into something completely different.  I’m happy that I let myself step out of my original thought process regarding this wreath.  Go me! 😉

Until next time, y’all take good care! ❤

Guest Bedroom #3 – The Purple Room

Hi All,

Now to to finish the upstairs part of the home tour; our third and final guest bedroom upstairs is what I’ll be highlighting in this entry; it is the only bedroom that has an ensuite bathroom. The dresser and bedside tables in this room are ancient, and I don’t mean “pretty” ancient as in they are collectors pieces, I mean, 1980’s soft pine, beat up like crazy ancient…haha. My hubby and I used them in our master bedroom for years and years and we’ve just never gotten rid of them.  One of these days, we will most likely refurbish them in some way, we just haven’t gotten around to doing that yet…not high on our “to-do” list I guess. 😉 Regardless, they are quite sturdy pieces and anchor this room nicely.  I have no earthly idea what ever happened to the headboard, so we did find this gray fabric covered and tufted headboard on Overstock.com, and I will say that I love it so much. 🙂

IMG_0173

We’ve dubbed this space “The Purple Room” for the obvious reason, the color of the bedding and accessories.  I love the look of gray and purple together, so when I found this comforter set in Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I scarfed it up and set to the task of collecting and making the accessories with which to bring this room to life. 🙂

Let’s start with the picture over the bed:

1V4A2863

We found that picture in Michaels one day; it was in a cardboard ‘frame’.  My hubby  constructed the wooden picture frame and cut the matting to fit and framed it up in no time; it turned out so pretty and fits nicely in this bedroom.  I love to accent with those black scrolly wall pieces, I found all 3 in Hobby Lobby, on sale of course, I honestly don’t buy too much home decor that isn’t on sale.

We decided to go with a black ceiling fan in this room with silver accents…classic…

IMG_9539

I made this burlap wreath and I actually utilized one of our daughter’s old Boyd’s Bear bunnies into the design replacing his worn out neck ribbon with a pretty purple ribbon.  I found some purple silk flowers in lavender and cream and made a cream burlap bow to finish it off.  I can’t for the life of me remember where I got that wreath hanger, but it is metal and quite sturdy.  I found that little shadowbox under the wreath on sale and filled it with things that I already had here at the house.

IMG_166011825928_10206987538317358_7047143603318203063_n

We decided to put a tv in this room just in case we have a guest that might like to watch a little tv before retiring for the night. 🙂  The table that sits under the tv is another piece that has been around for decades, although, this one is a really nice oak table that when purchased was unstained and my hubby stained it to the exact color that we wanted.

1V4A2866 11846633_10207013233719727_3240507543954665602_n 11817165_10207013233639725_8988499147774118813_n

I honestly didn’t buy too many things to utilize in this room–I just went down into my basement bins that hold my extra ‘stuff’ and started collecting everything in the purple/gray/silver color scheme.  I carried it all into the room, put it on the bed and just started putting little groupings and arrangements together. 🙂

IMG_1661

Here is the bathroom:

11828656_10206987539677392_3946361095746907911_n

This is a very small space, but, it is private and I know that those who stay in this room appreciate that attribute. 🙂   I really enjoyed doing that little wall grouping.  Actually, my hubby helped a lot, we had the 3 shelves, the owls, and the butterflies laid out on the floor in Hobby Lobby one day; we were arranging and rearranging those items until we finally got it like we wanted it…that process took a while…haha.  Once we got everything home and hung up, I put all of the other stuff together on the shelves pulling from the stash that I had retrieved from the basement.

Just as I did in the other two rooms, I have placed a basket of goodies on the bottom of the bed.  I think it adds a nice touch, makes guests feel welcome, and also provides them with necessities if they happened to forget anything.

IMG_0172

I used the very same type of curtain in this room as I did in the Happy room and in the Turquoise Room the only difference being that I used a silver curtain rod and tie back hooks.  The grommets in the curtains are silver as well.

IMG_0173

All three bedrooms are pretty large upstairs, and one of my goals was to make them feel cozy and comfortable without cluttering the room up with extra furniture and such; it is a task that I believe I have completed in all three spaces. 🙂  I’d love to stay in any one of these rooms if I were a guest here. 😉

Guest Bedroom #2 – The Turquoise Room

Hi All,

I debated about what I wanted this room to be for months and many options came to mind, how about making it into a craft room? Since it sits on the front of the house and has great light it would make a lovely place to be creative. Or, maybe it would make a great office, or possibly we could turn it into a nice upstairs rec room.  In the end I ended up making it a guest bedroom.  I don’t need that room to be any of those other things, but, now that it is a bedroom it has already been utilized several times to house visitors.  I decided to use turquoise as the accent color because, one, it is my daughter’s favorite color and she had claimed this room as hers when she comes to spend the night, and two, because I love how turquoise pairs with khaki; I had already chosen and hung the curtains in a khaki color (the same curtains that I used downstairs in the living and dining rooms and upstairs in the Happy Room).  In addition, I had found the bedding in Bed, Bath, & Beyond and I wanted to use something that would pop against that choice.

10173585_10203493702733652_7358230111975863156_n

We didn’t have extra bedroom furniture left over from our other home to put in this room, so we needed to buy new, but, we decided not to spend a ton of money creating the wheel (so to speak).  So, one day while looking at the IKEA website, we stumbled across these turquoise bedside tables!

IMG_8701

I knew it was meant to be, so off we went to do a little shopping at IKEA.  We ended up purchasing 2 bedside tables, a queen sized mattress, a white bed frame and headboard, a full length mirror, two white lamps, and a white table to be used as a tv stand.

1V4A2860

After I had the furniture in place, the bed made up with the comforter, pillow shams, added the throw pillows, and hung mirror on the wall. I started searching for the accent pieces that would help to bring this room to life.

photo 5
Here are some of the turquoise and khaki colored accent pieces that I found one day when I was shopping specifically for this room. These items are from several different stores…World Market, Hobby Lobby, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
IMG_8702
We already had that little table, we painted it white and I found that basket that is housing the towels at IKEA on the same day that we purchased the furniture.
IMG_8704
I got the canvas picture that is over the bed at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for 80% off. What a deal!!

I found this sweet little chair at World Market and I used a $50 off coupon on the day I purchased it and the pillow.

IMG_8781

My hubby painted parts of the ceiling fan in a turquoise color…spiffy! 🙂

photo 2

I made this burlap wreath, I absolutely love owls and had already found others to use as accents around the room!  So, when I found that owl in Hobby Lobby, I snatched it up to use in this wreath.

IMG_8806

IMG_8807

As I do in all of the bedrooms, I leave a little basket of goodies on the end of the bed for those who might forget to pack something.

IMG_0169

In the end, this turned out to be a lovely room full of warmth and a bit of charm thrown in for good measure. My hope is that anyone who might to stop by to stay for a spell will lay their head down in this room and will feel the love with which it was created engulf them like a warm snuggly blanket.

Burlap Wreaths and More Burlap Wreaths

Hi to all of you lovelies out there!

I am like the energizer bunny, I hardly ever sit still and I am always planning my next project, event, trip, decor change, etc…  One of my hubby’s nicknames for me is “The Planner”; I know I must drive the poor man crazy at times! 😉  So, when I was gathering pictures for this blog post, I surprised myself with the sheer number of wreaths that I’ve made this past year .  I’ve created some of these for my own use here in our home, and I’ve created a few to give as gifts. My plan for this blog entry is to just *show* you the different wreaths, if you would like to know how to make one you can reference one of my earlier blog posts here. 🙂

So here goes:

This one hangs in our “mud room”, I hung it on the door leading to the garage–I added that wreath hanger that you see in the picture on the left, it is awesome.  You can find it online here:

IMG_8779 IMG_6048

I made this one for one of our guest bedrooms…

IMG_8806 IMG_8807

I threw this one together because I wanted a little something more for on that corner shelf:

IMG_8455IMG_6473

I made this one for a dear friend who loves owls:

IMG_6229 IMG_6231 IMG_8938

I made this one for a friend…She asked me to make her something to hang on her Mom’s nursing home room’s door:

IMG_6252IMG_9256

I made this one for another one of our guest bedrooms, I actually utilized an old Boyd’s Bear Bunny that had been stuck in a box in my basement for years:

IMG_9537IMG_1665 IMG_1595

I hung this one in the laundry room…:)

IMG_9343IMG_6517IMG_6519

I made this one to go with the family reunion decor (red and white gingham, gerber daisies, and mason jars):

IMG_6471

This one was to add to an Easter grouping that I had put together out on the front porch:

IMG_9580 1V4A0229

I made this one to be hung on the front door from Memorial Day through July 4th. You’ll also see our pups in one of the pictures below. The Newfoundland dogs names are Sophie and Samson (brown), and the Golden’s name is Gracie. I love them like crazy! ❤

1V4A0847 1V4A0860 1V4A0849

And last but not least, I just made this one the other day.  This is for a very dear friend of mine who lives in another State.  My hubby is constructing a box for me to pack it up in for shipping…it is 30″ in diameter (as wide as some front doors, in other words, it is huge). 🙂

IMG_8837 IMG_8847 IMG_8849 IMG_8850 IMG_8857

Well, that does it for the burlap wreaths that I’ve made in the past year.  I’ve also made some grapevine and deco mesh wreaths as well–subjects for another blog. 🙂 I hope that one of these wreaths will inspire one of you to try to make one for yourself. You can do it! And I’m right here if you have any questions at all, feel free to leave me any questions in the comments.  Happy Crafting!! ❤

Front Door Burlap Wreaths

Good Afternoon!

As is typical of me, I woke up one morning with the idea in my head that I wanted to make something. What I chose to do on that particular day was to make my aunt a burlap wreath for her front door.  The only problem with that was that I had never tried to make a burlap wreath and I had no idea where to start.  So, I took to google search (one of my best friends…lol) and I started reading and watching tutorials; this gave me the basic idea of how to, at the very least, *start* to make my wreath.  I will admit that I spent a bit too much time searching “how-to” blogs and videos and not enough time trusting my own abilities to accomplish my goal on my own.  So, I put my computer down, got in my car, and headed to my local go-to craft store Hobby Lobby.  We also have a Michaels and an AC Moore here in our town, but I am usually successful at finding exactly what I need to bring a project to fruition at Hobby Lobby.  So, anyway, I started walking through the store collecting my needed supplies.  When all was said and done, I was successful at making my aunt a wreath and then I made my cousin one too; I gave them to them for Christmas last year.  But, I wasn’t exactly satisfied with those two wreaths even though my aunt and cousin loved them and were so sweet with their compliments regarding just how much they loved them. Here are pictures of those two wreaths:

IMG_7986 IMG_5153

I decided I would try again (I am nothing if not determined to try and try again until I’m satisfied with the end result) and so I set myself to the task of making a burlap wreath for our front door, I wanted it to be quite large because our home sits pretty far back from the road and I wanted to be able to see the wreath on the front door from our cul-de-sac. So off to Hobby Lobby I went yet again and I began to gather my supplies.  The first thing I picked up was a 24″ metal wreath form with the twist ties already attached. I then collected all of the other things that I thought I might need to make my wreath.  I will try my best to put into bulleted form how I constructed not one but 2 burlap wreaths for my front door…yes, I said 2…lol…I made one for the inside of the door too. We found a wreath hanger that we could manipulate over the door that provided a hook on either side of the door.  I was very happy with what I ended up with and I have made many other burlap wreaths since, so many that my hubby has made me a wreath hanging station in our basement.  In another blog, I will post a bunch of pictures of the burlap wreaths that I’ve made, some for my own use, a few for gifts, and one or two for friends who sweetly asked me to create one for them.

The two specific wreaths featured in this blog are wreaths that hang on my front door at times of the year when we are not celebrating a Holiday or for times when I am not using a specific seasonal decor…in other words, these are my “everyday” wreaths. I switch out the outside front door wreath A LOT… 🙂 Here are pictures of the finished wreaths:

IMG_5993 IMG_5840

Here is how I put all online tutorials out of my head and created my own version of a burlap wreath:

*Supplies needed for a very large burlap wreath: 24″ wreath form with the twist ties or pipe cleaners already attached, or you can attach your own pipe cleaners at regular intervals around the form–not hard, 2 rolls of burlap–for these extra large wreaths, I used burlap “runner” rolls, a coordinating colored burlap or ribbon, any accents that you might like to add such as pip berries, silk or dry flowers, wooden words, wooden or metal ‘pictures’, wooden or metal initials, seasonal decor, and so on…Let your imagination run wild

IMG_8834IMG_5829IMG_5918

*Find a large surface with which to work and lay out all of your supplies

*Plug in your hot glue gun–I try not to use too much glue on these types of wreaths, but I do glue pipe cleaners to the backs of pictures and/or other accents (wooden initials, pictures, etc…) so that I can tie them onto the wreath frame. And when necessary, I do glue certain things into place if they just won’t stay by attaching them with the pipe cleaners

*Work your way around the wreath form starting on the outside ring gathering and  catching burlap into each pipe cleaner and then moving to the inside ring and doing the same thing. I’ve seen some people online who measure the length of burlap that they put between each pipe cleaner, I do not do that, I just eyeball it and go for it. So once you have your outer and inner rows of burlap attached to the form, add your coordinating colored burlap or ribbon catching it into one of the outside pipe cleaners (by untwisting the pipe cleaner and adding it to the burlap that you already caught) and working to the next inside pipe cleaner, then back to the outside and so on all the way around the wreath.

IMG_5927IMG_5830IMG_5933

*Take a moment to glue pipe cleaners to the back of anything you might want to attach to the wreath form as you see me doing in the picture below.

IMG_5963

Instead of gluing, I just threaded a pipe cleaner through the metal clasp on the back of the picture

IMG_5948

*Then start attaching anything else that you’d like to put on your wreath either via the pipe cleaners that you attached, or directly into some of the pipe cleaners (you’ll see what I mean in the pictures below–SO hard to explain).  I chose slightly different things for each wreath, I chose to put our last name initial on both wreaths as well as a bow (that I made…I’ll need to do another blog about how to make a bow huh?) on both. Then I chose other specific items for each wreath consisting of pip berries, gerber daisies for the outdoor wreath to match our red door and the coordinating ribbon, other silk flowers and a wooden framed picture for the indoor wreath to match my room decor.

IMG_5944IMG_5966IMG_5972IMG_5951

Here is a link for the  Wreath Hanger that we used

IMG_5996IMG_5995IMG_5994

So there you go, I was finally successful at making burlap wreaths that met with my own approval…haha. Give a burlap wreath a try! Nothing is perfect in the crafting world, that’s what makes it so much fun and unique to just you! 🙂
